Give the packet one job

A folder full of chapter scans can be hard to approach later. Start with a question you want the material to answer: How does this process work? Which example explains the rule? What do I need for the next discussion?

Choose a short stretch of pages around that question. Include the definition or diagram an example depends on, even if it sits on the preceding page. A useful packet has enough context to stand on its own.

Save the source before taking notes

Record the book title, author, edition and printed page range in your notes app or a separate document. For example: Biology course reader, 2026 edition, printed pages 42–47. Add the chapter title if the book uses separate numbering in each section.

A PDF viewer may label the first scanned page as page 1 even when the book says 42. Keeping the printed number with a quotation gives you a way back to the source without opening every scan.

Keep the scan and your explanation side by side

Scan the selected pages with vFlat and check that the text closest to the spine is readable. If you use text recognition to copy a passage into your notes, compare that passage with the image before relying on it. Names, symbols and line breaks deserve a closer look.

Keep your own explanation separate from the copied wording. In your notes tool, make three parts: the question, the source passage with its page number, and your explanation.

Make something you can use next time

  1. Write a question that the selected pages help answer.
  2. Add a brief answer in your own words and point to the relevant printed page.
  3. Mark anything you still need to ask about or look up.

For a worked example, keep the problem and its explanation together. For a diagram, include the key or legend. Extracted text alone may lose relationships that are clear in the page image.

Finish with one small, findable set

Name the export for the topic and page range, then put it beside the related notes in your chosen storage. Open both files once to check that the names and page references match.

You can repeat the same process for another question later. The result is a collection organized around what you want to understand, with the original pages still close at hand. Available export and text-recognition options depend on your current vFlat plan; check the app before preparing a larger batch.
